In the Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, Russian deputies take part in a meeting, in Moscow, Wednesday, November 23, 2022.

On Thursday, November 24, the Russian parliament finally passed a law banning “propaganda” owned” unconventional sex » – or homosexual relations, but also pedophilia and sex change, which, nevertheless, remains permitted in Russia. The previous law, dated 2013, dealt only with “LGBT propaganda” with minors.

In a similarly inaccurate way, the “denial of family values” is prohibited.

With regard to homosexual relations, the text adopted on third reading is particularly vague: it is enough “arouse interest” that these relationships fall under the law, without even presenting them in a positive light. As a result, the deputy expressed at the meeting his fear that he would no longer be able to publicly criticize or denigrate homosexuality … In an equally inaccurate way, it is also forbidden “abandonment of family values”.

These prohibitions apply “media, internet, literature and cinema” or even advertising, that is, the entire public field. Violations will be punished with heavy fines, up to 10 million rubles (160,000 euros), and foreigners who violate this law can be deported.

The Duma, the lower house of parliament, on the other hand, declined during a second reading vote on Wednesday to provide for jail terms in the event of a repeat offence, or even formally extend the ban on video games. Some deputies have already begun to draw up lists of games “doubtful”.

Eksmo director Oleg Novikov believes that 50% of the books published by his publishing house may be at risk.

Faced with such statements, professionals are wondering what kind of films will disappear from the screens – from the most restrictive lists of works that directly touch on the topic of homosexual relations, to the widest ones where this topic is touched upon, by the way. The same question applies to literature: the director of the publishing giant Eksmo, Oleg Novikov, believes that 50% of the books published by his house may be at risk. Among them are all the works of Viktor Pelevin, as well as a biography of Tchaikovsky, who turned out to be a homosexual. Deputy Khinshtein tried to reassure, explaining that the classics of literature, such as lolitaVladimir Nabokov, would not have bothered, but without explaining the legal basis on which he expressed such an opinion.
