Ronaldo relaxes ahead of Portugal v Ghana World Cup opener

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo shrugged off his bitter split with Manchester United to claim another record as he became the first player to score in five World Cups with a penalty to help guide his side to a 3-2 win over Ghana.

The first half of the Group H match was forgettable apart from a few Ronaldo chances but it came alive after the break as Portugal started their campaign late. Ronaldo, a free agent after his second stint at Old Trafford ended abruptly on Tuesday, scored a dubiously awarded penalty in the 65th minute after a harmless encounter with Mohammed Salisu led to the referee pointing to the spot.

Ghana did nothing in the first half other than defend deep but gave their boisterous fans at the 974 Stadium something to cheer for when Andre Ayew equalized in the 73rd minute. Joao Felix restored Portugal’s lead five minutes later and Ronaldo then showed his class with a jingle before setting up Rafael Leao to stun Ghana.

Osman Bukari’s 89th-minute headed goal set up a dismal finale for Portugal but they survived nine minutes of stoppage time to win their opening World Cup game for the first time in their last four appearances.
